In this modern world full of everything to keep us happy in every single way possible, a lot of us are really not happy. We have TV shows entertaining enough to keep us laughing for days, we have social media to know what our loved ones are doing, and some of us are even lucky enough to be able to fulfill our dreams without experiencing many obstacles in our ways. So, what is our cause of unhappiness and dissatisfaction? Experts say the reason is our behavioural patterns.
Patterns in our way of thinking about how we do things have a huge impact on our state of mind. Now you might ask, is it possible to change my behaviour and thinking pattern in a day? When I said ‘simple’ habits, I didn’t mean anything like Aladdin’s lamp that will change your habits in the blink of an eye. Building good habits is not easy to start with, but it is not impossible. A bit of self-motivation and you will be ready to go.
So, what are the 10 simple habits to follow to kick-start your journey of happiness?
Try Smiling More Often
Unless you are not the grumpy one in your family or friend circle, you smile whenever something good happens, or when someone cracks a joke, or maybe when you are reading comics. But did you know that smiling releases dopamine, the hormone happiness? So, smiling more means more dopamine and more happiness.
Don’t deny this, when you suddenly decide to get fit and do exercise in the process and do it, your self-satisfaction and happiness know no bounds. Why does that happen? Because exercise boosts your self-esteem and reduces anxiety and stress. So why not start today? You don’t have to start with heavy exercise like doing 100 pushups in one go, those are for impressing your crush. Start with light physical activity like walking, yoga or even stretching. Make it a daily habit and then you can move on to heavier exercises if you want to. Remember, your cute little crush won’t be happy either if he/she sees you unhappy.
Sleeping plays a huge role in determining your mood. Whether you are living a busy life or an easy one, not getting a good night of sleep worsens your health in so many ways. You might say that your workload doesn’t let you sleep, remember that your workload won’t be reduced in any way if you are working with an unhealthy mind. Try getting about 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, and you will gradually see the changes in your health and mood eventually.
The food you eat also has a huge impact on your mood. I don’t mean highly processed, deep-fried junk food that satisfies your tongue. Foods like meat, poultry, and dairy products, are highly efficient in releasing happiness hormones like dopamine, and eventually, they make you happy.
Maintain A Journal
Remember all the times in our childhood when we tried to maintain a diary and eventually ended up forgetting about it? Now might be a good time to get started again, because jotting down your thoughts helps a lot with reducing stress.
Volunteer In Different Organizations
Trust me when I say that happiness is contagious. Try helping people out through organizations around you. Looking at someone who is grateful and happy that you helped will surely bring a smile to your face.
Plan Your Schedule
Disorganized people will always end up frustrated that they get over with their work. Don’t be that guy, plan your schedule for the next day and you will see how efficiently you have completed your day’s work, and then you will have time to relax and happily enjoy your leisure time.
Spend Less Time on social media
Even though social media has been made to make us happy, most of the time, it doesn’t. Focus more on things that deserve your attention, which will turn your attention away from negative things.
Being rough to everyone might show that you are dominant, but at the end of the day, you are the one who is going to feel guilty. Be kind to everyone, and you will definitely feel positive.
Do Not Pretend to Be Happy
Bad things are a part of normal life; pretence doesn’t fix anything. Acknowledge the fact that everyone goes through bad times just like you did and you will find yourself feeling better.
