“Career Talk” is a live program arranged by YSSE where some honorable guests came to share their insights, tips, and tricks to help the youth. Today, in the 8th episode of “Career Talk,” Md Tajdin Hassan came as the honorable guest to share some of his valuable thoughts with us. He is the head of the Marketing Department of The Daily Star. He is also the co-founder of the youth platform “Torun.”
Md Tajdin Hassan started his career in 2006 as a territory officer in “British American Tobacco.” Working with BAT for 6 and a half years, he realized that he wanted to explore more. As a result, he then gradually joined to “Chevron” to “Robi” to “DHL.” Then in one fine morning, he got a call from the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Brac University, from where he completed his graduation. He offered him a job in The Daily Star. This is how he changed his track from a corporate officer to the media industry. Even though this sounds pretty cool, his journey was very challenging.
According to him, the biggest lesson of his job life is how to adapt oneself to an occurring situation. He said adaptability is a must when one is entering in his corporate life. Adaptability depends on how diversified the learning is. Mr. Tajdin says if one can acquire the power of adaptability before beginning his corporate life, he would succeed in his life for sure.
He implied that our young generation must have a proper LinkedIn profile, where they should promote themselves constantly. In this modern era, a LinkedIn profile will make you more unique than others. After creating a LinkedIn profile, one’s work is not done. Work starts from here actually as one has to keep oneself updated with time. Besides, Communication skill, Negotiation skill, Leadership skill, Time management are some basic skills which are highly required in any job sector.
When Tajdin was asked, what makes a CV stand out, he simply replied that for him if a candidate has any part-time job experiences or extracurricular activities, that candidate is already ahead of others. He also said reference should be given to that person under whom one has done previous projects.
For choosing the major subject he said that one should choose the subject they enjoy. It’s not the factor as now every job is relatable to others. There is common thinking that Marketing and Finance are not compatible which is wrong. When working in the marketing department a person must know about the organization’s financial situation, their profits, investment analysis, and so on. And so, finance is relatable here. Again, if a finance person has to take any decision he must know about his or her markets, customers, market position so knowing marketing is a must. So, finance and marketing can go hand in hand.
We all know about a platform named “Mission Save Bangladesh,” which helped a lot of people in need in this corona pandemic. Mr. Tajdin played one of the leading roles of this initiative. So, what did they do? They formed a group and followed a precise four steps strategy.
At first, they immediately responded to the problem. What was the problem? Impoverished people would not get their food supplies because of the lockdown caused by Covid-19. Secondly, they tried to find out an appropriate solution for this, which is why they raised a huge amount of funds within a short period. In their third step, they arranged the logistics promptly. They made arrangements for enough transportation to deliver the supplies. And lastly, in the fourth step, they found out the needy people to hand over the supplies.
This live session was hosted by Md. Rafiul Shah, who is the head of the Marketing & PR Department of YSSE and broadcasted from the Facebook Page of YSSE.
