The story begins with the disappearance of a 17-years-old teenage girl named Saffyre Maddox in the evening of valentine’s day. How this incident affected some families from many different angles was put together throughout the story.
After the death of Saffyre’s parents, she had been hurting herself for three years. After that to get therapy she met Roan Fours, a child psychologist.
During the sessions, a mental dependency grew in Saffyre for her therapist Roan. When Roan suggested she should move on as her sessions were done which means Saffyre was ready to face the upcoming challenges of her life, she felt betrayed. After that she started spying on Roan and his family. She got to know about Roan’s affair.
In the meantime, several sexual assault cases had been filled in the neighbourhood. A guy wearing a mask was suspected to be involved in almost all the cases.
During the investigation of Saffyre’s disappearance, her blood was found by the apartments of Owen Pick who was one of the neighbours of Roan. Things got messy for Owen after the proof of involvement in incel websites right after leaving his job for some misconduct.
On the other side,Roan’s wife, Cate, got disturbed and suspicious about her husband’s lies and her son, Josh’s sneaking out too often.
So some questions had been raised by Saffyre’s disappearance. Was she also one of the victims of the recent sexual assault or anything might happen to her by someone else?
The story will give you enough thrills not to stop reading it. Lisa Jewell greatly described the characters’ development throughout the story. The incel culture and assault cases were put out exactly where it was necessary. The most interesting thing in this novel is how Lisa showed what we actually think about someone based on our limited beliefs, is not always right about what a person actually is. So depending on how a person is with me is not always the whole real version of oneself.
