Life before Covid-19 was a lot different than today’s world. The shift of the education system from being offline to online has also shifted spending quality time with friends. Before the Covid-19 situation, friends and mates used to hang out on campuses or restaurants. However, the scenario is a lot different now as most of the campuses are closed and they are not being able to meet each other physically. An alternative place to hang out with friends and mates has become the online gaming platform where friends can play as a team or meet new gamers and interact with each other while playing. For example, a game name “Valorant” by Riot games is popular nowadays. The initial release date of this game was 2nd June 2020. It falls under the “Tactical shooter” genre. In this game, friends can make a team that consists of 5 members and play a match against another team that has the same number of members. It is an FPS (First-person shooting) game played on computers where they can choose different players with different powers which makes the game even more exciting. Even though physical interaction is hard to substitute but online games like Valorant with interaction feature has become an alternative to spending time with friends and mates and enjoy their time at home. In the game, friends can chat, play and talk to each other by using headphones while playing the game. Ever since its release, it is highly popular among the youngsters and it got even more popular due to the Covid-19 outbreak which extended the lockdown and campus closure.
Another platform is quite popular among the youngsters named “Discord”. It is a platform where people can make rooms for them and interact, share screens, talk, and chat. It gives the sense of being more connected. It also shows in the activity space what other friends are doing. For example, if someone plays a game, discord shows what game he is playing and for how long.
Online gaming and interactive platform like these have become a part of the youngsters and it is being used as a possible alternative to communication and spending quality time. Even though sometimes it may hamper studies but with the help of these online platforms, youngsters are keeping themselves connected and entertained in these stressful times where everything is closed. So, a question may arise, “Is it helpful for the youngsters for mental growth?” which is hard to determine but this platform is keeping them entertained and connected.
