One of the most fundamental needs of a person is food. Food is important to keep a person alive and moreover keep it healthy. But a recent study showed that our foods are getting less nutritious. This study made people question the future of the food quality and how it will affect the health of every individual. Let’s find out this alarming situation.
What comes to your mind when you hear “less nutritious food”? You probably think of food that is oily and filled with carbohydrates. But have you ever considered rice, wheat, fruits and vegetables unhealthy? You probably think that that’s an absurd thing to say. But this has been happening for some decades now. The nutrients in plants and crops are decreasing. It is alarming because it will soon affect human health.
From a recent study, it is found that 18 types of rice have already lost a lot of nutrients. Many other crops like wheat and soybeans are also getting affected by 2050. These crops are already losing a lot of Protein, Zinc, Calcium and Potassium. Now that you think of this loss, you can realize how it is affecting our lives for years.
But this information of losing nutrients is not new to the scientists. They found out about this situation back in 2004. They conducted a study on garden crops to check their potassium, calcium, protein and Vitamin C levels. The study concluded that a great level of nutrients have been declining in these crops since 1950. Some activists actually declared that one might have to eat 10 tomatoes now to get the same amount of nutrients as one tomato in 1950. So, why were scientists silent for all these years? They thought this “Nutrient Apocalypse” happened due to the digitized farming methods people are using since the industrialized revolution. But that isn’t the case.
Climate change is happening. The rise in the global temperature is the work of climate change. The basic idea of climate change is the rise of CO2 in the environment. So, this CO2 is everywhere. We know that plants use CO2 as their food and they grow with the help of it. But, this CO2 is becoming a threat for plants too. Let’s see how.
What happens when you eat a lot? You get obese and sick. This same thing is happening with the plants right now. Due to a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere, the plants are absorbing a lot of it. So, they grow faster. Crops like rice, wheat and potatoes are growing a lot faster than before. So, this is good news, right? The answer is No. As consuming more food makes us sick, the fastest growing plants are also producing less nutrients.
The loss of important nutrients like protein, calcium, iron, Vitamins are making people’s craving for carbohydrates a lot higher. People are not getting enough nutrients from food. That’s why they are eating a lot. That causes obesity. A country like Bangladesh where 70% of the population practically lives by eating rice, the future is not very healthy. It is also one of the reasons for American Obesity Epidemic.
According to a research, around 2 billion people on earth are suffering from something called “Hidden Hunger”. This less nutrient situation is affecting the underdeveloped countries. Despite having enough calories, people are suffering from malnutrition.
Thus, this situation is called “The Great Nutrient Collapse” by some and if not dealt with climate change sooner, it may bring a devastating future.
