An electric bicycle is simply a bicycle. But it will come up with an integrated electric motor that is used to assist with the propulsion. You can differentiate between electric motorcycles and electric bicycles. E-bikes can all be pedalled but you know that no one can pedal electric motorcycles. It is a simple introduction to the e-bike. But now you will get to know why it became so popular that it broke records of sales in just two years despite many things that went adverse.
US industry of E-bike sales has risen up to $18m just before Covid 19 from $8.3m in February 2019. And by February 2021 the sales boomed to $39m. This sales report was shared by an American data-driven market research firm NPD and the advocacy group named People For Bikes.
But there are some confusions which have arisen regarding the type of E-bike. Policymakers also find difficulty in terms of introducing the rules and regulations about this particular vehicle. Because bicycles and E-bike look almost the same even sometimes the users do not understand the difference between these two things. For clarification, the US government has classified three categories of E-bike. Those are-
Class 1: The e-bikes which are under this class will be equipped with a motor that will be providing support only while pedalling, with this assistance the bike can be stopped when it reaches 20mph (32km/h).
Class 2: For the bike of class-2, it comes up with a weasand that can be used to put force on the e-bike at the exact speed of class-1.
Class 3: In the case of classification no-3, the bikes will be equipped with a motor that gives assistance only when the rider is pedalling, stopping. But there is one thing to be mentioned particularly. The assistance will be applicable only when the e-bike reaches 28mph (45km/h).
The classifications sound perplexing to you, right? Same to me even the e-bike lovers do not understand exactly which class of bike they are using. Ultimately, it remains confusing to everyone. Because even the use of simple software can create an immense difference.
For instance, in the US the National Park Service ignores the industry classification system and instead deems that e-bikes of any class can operate on park grounds alongside bicycles, provided their engines do not provide more than 750 watts of power.
People use E-bike to roam around in a small vehicle and they believe that it can keep them fit. Many aged and retired persons of the US use this bike to explore new things and follow the trend. Even though the price of these bikes is too high for them, they buy them. It is like a craze like a baby who tries to walk even if it falls numerous times at the initial stage.
You can take the example of Gregory Maassen. He is a former World Bank executive. He used to love cycling more than anything else. But from the moment he tried E-biking, cycling became boring for him. He feels that with an E-bike, he will not have much sweat. He can enjoy an exciting ride of rough and tough roads freely. He shared that in 2019, he bought one e-bike and is still using that one to go here and there. Not only using a new kind of bike, but it also has been a cool experience for him.
E-bikes are also environmentally friendly and make it easier for cyclists to travel further distances without any hassle and it is budget-friendly in comparison to other vehicles as well. So, we do what gives us pleasure and it is not bad if you have money in your pocket. What is your opinion on this matter?
