Back in the 80s socialising meant paying each other visits or going to the rooftop in the afternoon for a chitchat. For connecting with someone who is far away, the options were scarce and at times people had to wait for days, even months for a news as long as one-line but important nonetheless. Fast forward to the twenty-first century, when your friend residing in another continent is just one click away from you. The evolution of technology and the enormous and dynamic changes it brought along in the arena of communication and social media undoubtedly deserves great acknowledgement. We seem to spend a bulk of our time on social media,be it the casual browsing during a break or running your private venture or working under someone, social media has covered it all.Facebook,Instagram,Pinterest,LinkedIn- from making friends to running your business to building up your portfolio, social media definitely act as our go to platform. As we try to blend in with different communities that social media has presented to us,it is equally important that as a conscious and responsible member of the community we know the etiquettes that work as a driving force behind creating a healthier and toxicity-free environment for everyone. So lets take a sneak peek as to the do’s and don’ts of social media.
Be Careful What You Share
The community is shared by people with different mindsets. You need to bear in mind that your audience will judge you based on the contents you share. So it’s very important that you keep in mind this variety and post accordingly. This is not to say that you are not at liberty to post whatever you like. Just bear in mind not to offend someone.
Handling Criticism
As mentioned earlier, people have different mindsets and not everybody will think the way you do. So be mentally prepared to receive the criticism. Don’t be defensive. Try to take things very constructively and try to find the silver lining in the cloud.
AVOID WRITING IN ALL CAPS
Admit it, the text above sounded as if it were shouting it’s way out. This is precisely what happens when we decide to go all caps. It makes us look as though we are trying to shout at the reader or trying to grab the attention of someone.
Don’t tag irrelevant people
Tagging other’s do help a lot in boosting your post and letting others take notice of you but trust me on this, long gone are the days when people could feel happy with 381 others. Tag only the people relevant to the post.
Be respectful towards others
As tempting as it is to express our opinions when we disagree with someone, but sometimes it is better to agree to disagree when it comes to social media. As opposed to real-life communications, virtual communications don’t warrant the fact that the reader would comprehend the tone used while expressing one’s opinion and might interpret it as being arrogant.
Don’t use someone else’s content without their permission
This is completely a breach of privacy. One should be very careful not to use someone else’s picture, write-ups or ideas in social media without his/her permission. On events that you do share some widely publicised content, remember to give credit to the original content creator.
Our social media is basically our profile. As our lives are getting more and more intertwined with our social platforms, it is very important that we maintain and present ourselves conscientiously on public platforms. It is equally important that we maintain a tolerant platform as the community has its own share of diversity. Do not forget to follow these etiquettes for an enhanced experience on social media and last but not least happy browsing!
