Oymyakon, the coldest inhabited area on the earth, is located in Russia with a population of around 500. The average temperature of Oymyakon revolves around -56 degrees celsius. It is also known as the Northern Pole of Cold.
The weather in Oymyakon is so cold that even eyelashes and saliva get frozen while walking on the streets. If you pour a pot of water into the air, it will convert into ice before touching the ground.
People here enjoy only a 3 hours long day in the winters. In December, the sun often rises at 10 AM.
Now here comes a question, how do people manage to survive here?
With no surprise, people here have developed the ability to adapt to this harsh environment making Oymyakon the coldest inhabitable part of the world.
People keep the engines of their vehicles running 24×7 to save them from being damaged. Also, they have to wear 6 to 7 layers of cloth to comfort them in the winter.
Vegetables cannot grow in the frozen environment, as a result, people survive by eating only heavy cold meat and fishes. Asides, one of the popular cuisines of Oymyakon is ice cubes served with macaroni that is made with horse blood.
The difficulties of people to survive in this adverse environment cannot be described in words. The ground remains completely frozen. People use outhouses because indoor plumbing often gets frozen.
Children are given special training to go to school in harsh winters. But the government closes down all schools when the temperature falls below -55 degrees Celsius.
Oymyakon has been a place of great interest for many adventure loving people from all over the globe. Hence, the tourist sector has greatly benefited the economy of this small village.
