Dear earth has opened itself to mankind with plenty of crops, vegetation & fruits. But among them, some are so special that they have reached beyond many peoples’ reach. In this series, we talk about such fruits which creates a big question mark for being so expensive.
The Miyazaki Mango
Typically known as the “egg of the sun” or “Taiyo no Tomago” in Japanese is the world’s most expensive mango. Its glowing reddish color, sweeter taste & nutrition have caused its value to be more than 3000 dollars for a pair!
The Miyazaki mango is different from other mangoes firstly in terms of appearance. Mangoes are grown all over south Asia & they are mainly greenish or yellow in color. Sometimes a mixture of red & yellow. But the Miyazaki breed must have to be glowingly red, like flames of fire, sometimes compared to a giant dinosaur egg. The mangoes should be weighed around approximately 350 grams.
Harvest time & environment
The Miyazaki breed needs lots of sunlight & plenty of water to be harvested. One important thing about any expensive fruits is, the other attributes apart from nutritious value for example color, weight, skin e.t.c must be on a particular level. This is what makes these fruits too difficult to be harvested. Miyazaki is also the same. It must be harvested in lots of sunlight & water, must be collected & planted in a particular time of the season. Otherwise, it would fail to provide such attributes. The peak time is between April & August in Japan.
Taste,Nutrition & Benefits
Normally, doing justification to its price, Miyazaki mango tastes really better than the general breeds. It contains 15 percent higher sugar levels than normal mangoes. So, like the sweetish red color, it also tastes the same inside.
The Miyazaki Mango is filled with beta carotene & folic acid. These nutrients are said to be good for tired eyes. It is also estimated that it helps to reduce the risk of cancer. It is very rich in antioxidants & helps with the short vision problem of patients.
Why so expensive?
In Japan, all kinds of mangoes are expensive. But the Miyazaki breed is too expensive because of its tough harvesting procedures. It needs very warm weather, abundant irrigation. Also, it’s the uniqueness of looks (flaming red or sometimes purple) has increased its value. Rich nutritious value is also a motivator for the high price. High security is needed to prevent any disruption in the gardens from any kinds of animals.
Miyazaki in Bangladesh & India
The purple breed is recently being harvested by a couple in Madhya Pradesh, India. Surprisingly, the environment of Bangladesh is also very suitable for harvesting Miyazaki mangoes. Some businessmen have tried & succeeded in producing small-scale production of Miyazaki. Even a gardener by hobby, Mr. Farooq has been successful in growing the perfect red Miyazaki on his rooftop! If these practices are propelled & encouraged by the Government, Bangladesh can also become a competitor in exporting Miyazaki against Japan.
